its current affairs. Asian America focuses on the celebration
of the Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month with one of the most crucial
international issues: the United States' relationship with China and
Taiwan. Even before George W. Bush's first 100 days as president,
it was clear he would face his first big test over China and Taiwan.
From the standoff over the United States' plane in Hainan, to the confrontation
over United States missile sales to Taiwan, and the ongoing tussle over
China's place in the World Trade Organization, President Bush's early
decisions are critical. They are likely to shape US-China and
Taiwan relations for years to come. In this segment of Asian America,

Summary: You may have experienced
different sights and senses in Lunar New Year celebrations.
Elements common to most Asian folk arts and festival are expressions
for wishes of happiness, well-being, the warding off of misfortune and
all the good things for . Today, Asian America explores the key
elements of Chinese folk art in Taiwan. This documentary film has been
provided by the New York Chinese Information and Cultural Center, the
cultural representative of Taiwan in the United States.
"West meets East"
Summary: As part of the celebration
of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, Asian America shows you how
some foreign visitors, fascinated with eastern culture, live in Taiwan
and have become interwoven in the fabric of that society.
"Women
in Modern Taiwan"
Summary: It is a poignant account
of how women have broken free from the fetters of tradition to pursue
dreams in ways that would have been unimaginable 30 or 40 years ago.
As part of the celebration of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month,
Asian America brings a documentary entitled, "Juggling the Old
and the New: Women in Modern Taiwan," courtesy of the Chinese Information
and Culture Center in New York. This film records the experiences of
some of Taiwan's most accomplished women, including ROC Vice President
Annette Lu, who has brought attention to women's rights throughout her
career.
"The
Music and Dance of Taiwan's Indigenous People"
Summary: As part of the celebration
of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, Asian America brings one of
the most touristic elements of Taiwan. A documentary, provided
by the Chinese Information and Culture Center in New York, chronicles
the ceremonial songs and dances of nine indigenous Taiwanese tribes.
These nine indigenous tribes make up only 2% of the 23 million people
living in Taiwan. Though few in number, these ancient people are a defining
characteristic and a national treasure of Taiwan.

Moves Forward"
Summary: As the last part of the
celebration of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, Asian America
reveals how Taiwan, the island of 23 million people, is taking part
in the global trend toward international integration and cooperation.
A documentary provided by the Chinese Information and Culture Center
chronicles this movement with the film, "Taiwan Moves Forward."

the Asia Society published a travel guide entitled, "Asian in New
York City," which is filled with surprises. Even the most
knowledgeable New York won't claim to know that their city has, not
one Chinatown, but three. In addition, one will not be able to
recount that Koreatown, a little Manila, and a southeast Asian row is
on Baxter Street. This book seems to be about Asian transformation,
not only of New York, but of the United States as well. Tony Emerson,

authors.

spoke with Tony Award-winning playwright and screenwriter, David Henry
Hwang, whose most recent works include the hit musical "Aida"
on Broadway, and the upcoming movie, "Possession," starring
Gwyneth Paltrow.
