Summary: Alexander Jeong, a Korean American from Flushing, New York became a mentor to many Koreans in South Korea on Christmas Eve of 2000 when a documentary of his moving life story was nationally televised from Seoul. South Korea’s MBC-TV named Alexander Jeong its “Man of the Year” for the courage he has shown in overcoming a paralyzing automobile accident to become a top prosecutor on the tough streets of Brooklyn, New York. For this segment of Asian America, Alexander Jeong shares his story with us. 

The United States' Relationship with China and Taiwan"

Summary: During the month of May which is the Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, Asian America features various aspects of Taiwan and its current affairs.  Asian America focuses on the celebration of the Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month with one of the most crucial international issues: the United States' relationship with China and Taiwan.  Even before George W. Bush's first 100 days as president, it was clear he would face his first big test over China and Taiwan.  From the standoff over the United States' plane in Hainan, to the confrontation over United States missile sales to Taiwan, and the ongoing tussle over China's place in the World Trade Organization, President Bush's early decisions are critical.  They are likely to shape US-China and Taiwan relations for years to come.  In this segment of Asian America, Tony Emerson, a senior editor at Newsweek International discusses with the experts on China.  

"The United States-Japan Foundation"

"Shadow Magic and Ann Hu"

Summary: Asian films are streaming to the United States and making headline news.  Asian America focuses on a new film from China, entitled "Shadow Magic."  This remarkable drama provides a fascinating portrait of the era at the turn of the last century when movies were first introduced to China.  The film has been widely acclaimed at festivals throughout the world.  Asian America is happy to introduce Shadow Magic and its producer/director Ann Hu.  Ms. Hu is an Asian American, born and raised in Beijing, has been acclaimed as a promising newcomer in the film industry.  For this segment of Asian America, New York University Professor Richard Brown, who teaches the now-legendary series "Movies 101," interviews the person behind Shadow Magic.

"Health Through Kung Fu"
Summary: Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do and Akido are just a few examples of martial arts that have been practiced in China, Korea and Japan for thousands of years. In addition to becoming household names in the United States, these sports have now joined the international sporting arena in the East Asian Games, the Asian Games and the Olympics. "Acupuncture: An Alternative Medicine"

Summary: For thousands of years, Chinese used acupuncture as a tool of treatment in medicine but only in recent years acupuncture has caught the attention of western medicine and has been recognized as an important part of alternative medicine. "Key Elements in Chinese Folk Arts"
Summary: You may have experienced different sights and senses in Lunar New Year celebrations.   Elements common to most Asian folk arts and festival are expressions for wishes of happiness, well-being, the warding off of misfortune and all the good things for life. Today, Asian America explores the key elements of Chinese folk art in Taiwan. This documentary film has been provided by the New York Chinese Information and Cultural Center, the cultural representative of Taiwan in the United States.


"West meets East"
Summary: As part of the celebration of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, Asian America shows you how some foreign visitors, fascinated with eastern culture, live in Taiwan and have become interwoven in the fabric of that society.


"Women in Modern Taiwan"
Summary: It is a poignant account of how women have broken free from the fetters of tradition to pursue dreams in ways that would have been unimaginable 30 or 40 years ago.  As part of the celebration of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, Asian America brings a documentary entitled, "Juggling the Old and the New: Women in Modern Taiwan," courtesy of the Chinese Information and Culture Center in New York. This film records the experiences of some of Taiwan's most accomplished women, including ROC Vice President Annette Lu, who has brought attention to women's rights throughout her career.


"The Music and Dance of Taiwan's Indigenous People"
Summary: As part of the celebration of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, Asian America brings one of the most touristic elements of Taiwan.  A documentary, provided by the Chinese Information and Culture Center in New York, chronicles the ceremonial songs and dances of nine indigenous Taiwanese tribes. These nine indigenous tribes make up only 2% of the 23 million people living in Taiwan. Though few in number, these ancient people are a defining characteristic and a national treasure of Taiwan.


"Taiwan Moves Forward"
Summary: As the last part of the celebration of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, Asian America reveals how Taiwan, the island of 23 million people, is taking part in the global trend toward international integration and cooperation.  A documentary provided by the Chinese Information and Culture Center chronicles this movement with the film, "Taiwan Moves Forward."


"Asia in New York City"

Summary:  Asian America discusses Asia in New York City.  As part of its ongoing mission to bridge the gap of understanding Asia, the Asia Society published a travel guide entitled, "Asian in New York City," which is filled with surprises.  Even the most knowledgeable New York won't claim to know that their city has, not one Chinatown, but three.  In addition, one will not be able to recount that Koreatown, a little Manila, and a southeast Asian row is on Baxter Street.  This book seems to be about Asian transformation, not only of New York, but of the United States as well. Tony Emerson, senior editor at Newsweek International discusses the book with its authors.  


"Ang Lee and David Henry Hwang"

Summary: Ang Lee's epic, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon continues making cinema history and breaking box office records.  The film walked away with 4 Oscars after receiving 10 nominations for the 2001 Academy Awards.  Asian America is proud to present the following encore broadcast of its interview with director Ang Lee.  Ang Lee spoke with Tony Award-winning playwright and screenwriter, David Henry Hwang, whose most recent works include the hit musical "Aida" on Broadway, and the upcoming movie, "Possession," starring Gwyneth Paltrow.
